It’s like entering a light-flooded living room. Immediately you feel safe and home, especially after the warm welcome by Ms Topsy Thun-Hohenstein. You’re offered a seat at the big wooden table, to drink a warm cup of coffee or tea, an ice cold elder blossom lemonade if preferred – accompanied by the cookie of the week – and to delve among various international knitting magazines. Feel free to unpack your needles and start knitting – what could possibly be more relaxing than making your own bobble hat or pair of gloves at a cozy place like this? If you run out of yarn simply reach out for the shelves with all kinds of very well presented and carefully chosen wool. And even as a beginner there’s no reason to be ashamed. Ms Thun-Hohenstein and her daughter Paula are happy to coach you. Best you join one of the official knitting classes. Drink included.

Laniato – Das Wiener Wollcafé (The Vienna Wool Café) opened up in September 2011. It’s a full success from the start. The media got very excited about it after «Die StadtSpionin», a Vienna based newsletter with about 16’000 subscribers, heard of the new concept and presented it as the shop of the week. «It was pure luck», Ms Thun-Hohenstein says. The result is obvious: One client followed right after the other while our stay. Don’t miss the chance next time you’re in Vienna and pay Laniato a visit. You won’t regret.
