Invisible Knitwear Mending – with Sara Liz Marty

This workshop is specifically designed for mending knitwear with swiss darning. It’s a great technique and also the first step towards invisible mending.
In my usual visible / creative mending workshop we rarely have time to learn this somewhat challenging technique. So this afternoon we will focus solely on swiss darning to mend your broken knitwear. No previous experience needed.

Bring along: Holey knitwear in plain knit ONLY.

The course starts with a brief overview of the fashion industry’s impact on our planet – and how you can be a part of the solution. Afterwards, we will examine the garments that you have brought in.
We’ll go through the technique step-by-step, first working on a sampler before you mend your favourite piece. Sara is on hand with useful tips and tricks on mending, knitting and hand sewing.

Materials available during the course:
wool / yarn, sampling swatches as well as darning mushrooms and needles

Please bring with you:

• Choose one or two pieces of clothing from your wardrobe that you would like to repair. Ahead of the course you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire about your chosen garment(s) and their holes (incl. photos). You will then be contacted by Sara to see if your aspired mending project is feasible for the day. Further information will follow after course registration.

Sara Liz Marty:
Sara Liz Marty is a designer, artist and sustainability consultant exploring alternative ways of engaging with clothing that sit outside the prevalent ‘selling, buying, binning’ paradigm.

She studied textile design in Bath and then worked as a freelance designer in London. Sara was awarded a distinction from the MA Fashion Futures course 2020 at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London. After having spent nearly a decade in England, Sara has returned to live in Switzerland.
