 ful and intricate lace pieces through a simple and meditative technique wi
 th Puerto Rican fiber artist\, Zaida Adriana Goveo Balmaseda.\n\nWhat are 
 Soles?\nSol lace is a type of needle lace usually worked in pieces or appl
 iqués. The technique consists of drawing a net of thread and then weaving
  and knotting radially to form patterns. It has its origins in Spain and a
 rrived to America in the 16th century\, where it continued to develop into
  variations known as Ñandutí\, Soles de Maracaibo\, and simply Soles. So
 l Lace is most often used to decorate heirloom clothing\, baby blankets an
 d home linens\, but also assembled to create beautiful lace fabrics and ac
 cessories.\nUnderstanding the essence of the technique gives us a vocabula
 ry that we can apply in both traditional and experimental/contemporary con
 texts.\n \nThis workshop for beginners will be taught by fiber artist Zaid
 a Adriana Goveo Balmaseda\, who will introduce us to the technique as it i
 s worked in her native country of Puerto Rico.\n\nDuring this full-day wor
 kshop Zaida Adriana will explain the origins of the technique and show tra
 ditional and contemporary examples. Students acquire the basic knowledge t
 o make Soles of different sizes\, shapes\, and decorative patterns. They l
 eave with two completed Soles\, and the materials to keep creating and exp

 maseda\nZaida Adriana Goveo Balmaseda is a fiber artist whose work serves 
 as a hands-on manifesto of the symbiotic relationship we can have with our
  surroundings. She makes slowly and mindfully\, using local/organic fibers
 \, recycled or found materials\, and natural dyes. These materials are tra
 nsformed through traditional craft techniques she respectfully re-contextu
 alizes.\nHer practice weaves together fiber-art\, soft sculpture\, materia
 l rescue\, and contemplative performance.\n \nZaida Adriana advocates the 
 slow\, ethical and hand-made through talks and workshops at places like Du
 duá\, Manufacture NY\, Slow Fashion Spain/Ethical Fashion Academy\, Eilee
 n Fisher\, Bloomingdales\, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. She serves as t
 he Country Coordinator of the Fashion Revolution movement in Puerto Rico.\
 n\nAs recipient of the Lexus Grant for Artists\, she is currently producin
 g a large installation inspired by Sol lace for the Museum of Art of Puert
 o Rico.\n\n
