Batik
Batik is an ancient textile technique from Indonesia. It is a resist dyeing method in which the fabric is marked with liquid beeswax before dyeing. The wax, once solid, prevents the penetration of the colour (dye) in the treated areas. Thin lines are made with a special tool called tjanting.
Since the wax is afterwards removed with heat, the temperature of the dye bath must be low enough not to melt it.
In the next few weeks textile designer Marlies Rüegg will show us how to reproduce this fascinating traditional technique in a modern, stylish way. Apply here to participate in the next workshops with Mariles and bring home your own batik silken scarf.
